State Profiles of India
Much talked about for its cultural and geographical diversities, India is a conglomeration of 7 Union Territories and 28 States. On taking a look at the State profiles, one would find that all the States have their own governing bodies with a Governor at the helm. The Union Territories, on the other hand, fall under the regime of the President of India, who appoints administrators to take care of the administrative issues of those areas.
States of India
In order to understand this nation or to get a clear picture what it stands for in totality, it will be wise to take a look at the basic profile of Indian states.
Andhra Pradesh: Hyderabad is the capital city of this 4th biggest (in terms of area) state of India. Hyderabad Biryani is the most popular cuisine of this region.
Arunachal Pradesh: This Indian state covers an area of 83,743 km2 and Itanagar is its capital city. Here, select range of paintings, carpets and pottery items are found.
Assam: This state of India is 78,550 km2 wide and its capital city is Dispur. Assam is well known for Assam tea, silk and biodiversity.
Bihar: This state covers 99,200 km2 of area and Patna is its capital city. The Madhubani paintings of this region are widely acclaimed.
Chandigarh: This Union Territory is 114 km2 long and is referred to as ‘city of gardens’ in India.
Chhattisgarh: This State extends over 135,194 km2 of area and Raipur is its capital city. It is a well known place for Kosa silk.
Goa: It is one of the smallest states of India and is a renowned beach destination. Goa Carnival is very popular with international tourists.
Gujarat: This State is 196,024 km2 long and Gandhinagar is its capital city. It contains some of the landmarks belonging to Indus Valley Civilization and is adored for Gujarati snacks.
Haryana: This State sprawls over 44,212 km2 of area and Chandigarh is its capital city. It is famous for its handloom tradition.
Himachal Pradesh: This State is extended over 55,673 km2 of area and Shimla is its capital city. This place is best known for its tourism industry.
Jammu & Kashmir: This Indian State is as long as 222,236 km2 and Srinagar is its largest city. Pashmina shawls are the main attraction of this region.
Jharkhand: This Indian State is as vast as 74,677 km2 and Ranchi is its capital city. This place is much talked about for scenic beauty and rich tribal heritage.
Karnataka: This State of India straddles over 191,976 km2 of area and Bangalore is its capital city. This place has popularized classical music in India.
Kerala: This State covers 38,863 km2 of area and Thiruvananthapuram is its capital city. It is a famous backwater destination of India.
Madhya Pradesh: This Indian State covers 308,252 km2 of area and Bhopal is its capital city. It is a famous destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Maharashtra: This State occupies 307,713 km2 of area and Mumbai is its capital city. It is the financial hub of India.
Manipur: This Indian State spreads over 22,347 km2 of area and Imphal is its capital city. It is well known for Manipuri Dance.
Meghalaya: This State of India is 22,720 km2 long and Shillong is its capital city. This place is much talked about for rich wildlife.

Lakshadweep Islands: This is one of the smallest Union Territories in India and is famous for coir fibres.
NCT of Delhi: The National Capital Territory of Delhi extends over 1,484 km2 of area and is a famous shopping destination.
Pondicherry: This Union Territory of India is well known for its rich educational system.
